Dr. Greider - I was saddened to read of your wife's passing while reading another friend's obituary. My sincere condolences to you during this very hard time. Prayers are sent your way.

Dr. Greider, please know that you and your family are being remembered in my thoughts and prayers. You were my orthopedic surgeon in both knee replacements. I'm doing well with my walking and bending ... thanks to you. Peace, Sister Barbara Ann Cernosek, OP

Valerie Greider, age 58, died Tuesday October 6, 2015 after a resolute 5-year battle with breast cancer. She was born in Palo Alto, CA in 1957 and lived in Houston and Bellaire since 1963.

Valerie, a member of a family of educators, attended St. John’s, Lovett Elementary, Bellaire High, Rice University, and Texas Women’s University. She had a remarkably wide variety of professional interests that culminated in numerous educational and professional degrees and certifications: Rice University, BS; Texas Women’s University, BS and Registered Nurse degrees; Certified Diabetes Educator; and Realtor/Broker. She pursued each of these activities with a confidence and enthusiasm that were among her outstanding qualities.

She was married for 32 years to Dr. Thomas Greider, an orthopedic surgeon in Houston. A principal joy in her life was her Whippet dogs, all, like Valerie, fast moving and spirited. Valerie was gifted, generous, and outspokenly honest. She is survived by her husband Dr. Tom Greider, her father and mother Professor and Mrs. Alexander Dessler (College Station), her sister Pauline (Chicago, IL) and Pauline’s daughters Alison, Darian, and Jamie “Babe” Parker, her brother Professor David Dessler (William & Mary), her brother Professor Andrew Dessler (Texas A&M), Andrew’s sons Alexander and Michael, and her uncle Norman Dessler (Chico, CA).

The family will gather for a private service at a later date.

In Valerie’s memory, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Fund or to the Rice University Dessler Space-Physics Award Fund, Rice University Development Office, MS-81, P.O. Box 1892, Houston, TX 77251-1892.
