Born in Houston, Texas on November 18, 1930 to Nellwynne and Roy H. Phillips, Martha Ann Phillips Schier passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2015. She was a third generation Houstonian with a rich family history going back to the American Revolution.

She attended Lamar High School, Southwestern University in Georgetown, where she pledged Delta Zeta, and the University of Houston where she received her
bachelor’s degree. In December of 1953 she married First Lieutenant T. Keith Schier, Finance Corps, United States Army. After his tour of duty in Indianapolis, they moved back to Texas and
made their permanent home in Houston. In Houston she taught first, second and third grades at Poe Elementary and various other schools.

She raised a beautiful daughter, Cynthia Ann Schier, and was also an incredible grandmother to her two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Jones and Lanson Burrows Jones, Jr. Called “Granny” by her grandchildren and all of their friends, she was always a welcome sight after school and sport practices with goodies in hand. Her gourmet cooking was continuously enjoyed by all.

Keith and Martha Ann’s life together was full of adventure, which included exotic game hunting, yachting and living through the “storm of the century” in 1993 on
their yacht, The Lady Tigre. They were both members of, and avidly involved in, the Houston Power Squadron. Martha Ann was president of the Kiwanitas (the ladies of Kiwanis), a board member at Holly Hall, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lady Washington Chapter, and loved spending time with her cherished friends in her Birthday Club. Martha Ann was also a devoted member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Martha Ann’s elegance, style and refined wittiness never went unnoticed. She loved entertaining and celebrating with friends and family. On her recent 85th birthday, November 18th, she was notably doting on her new great-granddaughter, Sophia Annalise Jones.

Martha Ann is now united in heaven with her husband, Thomas Keith Schier; her parents, Nellwynne and Roy Phillips; her aunt, Josephine Rogers Allen, and husband Marvin K. Allen; and many other cherished family members.

She is and will be greatly missed by her daughter, Cindy Schier Jones; son-in-law, Lanson Burrows Jones; granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Jones; grandson, Lanson Burrows Jones, Jr.; great-grandaughter, Sophia Annalise Jones; cousins Georganna Barnes and her husband, Dr. Peyton Barnes, and their son, John Barnes, and his wife, Susan Barnes; cousins Bob Hammann and his wife, Betty Hammann, and their daughter, Beth.

A graveside service will be held at Forest Park Lawndale on Friday, November 27th, at 1:00 PM. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church or to the charity of your choice.
