Three of our kids went through Archway, and Passageway with your son Garrett and got to see him through his upbeat happy self all the way too the sad, tired self and got the opportunity to love him through it all . Even though he wasn't part of our APG it hit everyone including all the parents when we found out that we had lost one of our community. His personality sparked the whole school and changed one of our kids mind set of how worth full his life really was, only if we could've seen him suffering we could have done the same. We are truly sorry for your loss, and want to send our love. May he rest in a better place.

From the BYBC family, Spring, Texas

I remember the excitement Sam had the day he realized a little boy his age named Garrett lived down the street on Brompton many years ago. They became fast friends and continued that close friendship through the years even after we all moved away from Brompton. Many times throughout the years he spent much time in our home and we considered him as family. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. As I watch Sam grieve the loss of such a close friend, I can't fathom the tremendous pain you are feeling. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry for your terrible loss. I'm praying for your family. I also wanted to thank you for your bravery in talking about the addiction.

Kelly Gilman-Post, Katy, Tx

Even though I don't know you or your family, a close family member put this on his Facebook page and I can relate. I have a nephew in addiction and my husband is an alcoholic. I am so proud that you have the guts to tell the real reason for Garrett's untimely death. There are so many dying from alcoholism and addiction but we tend to keep it secret. This can no longer be a secret. We have to be upfront about it. We may be able to help others deal with this insidious disease. I hope you have found Nar-Anon or Al-Anon as I have. Even after losing Garret, both these fellowships can help you. Thank you for being courageous to tell Garrett's story. Take good care of yourselves...

Alina V., Miami, Fl

We are so sorry for your loss. We knew Garret and what a charming young man he was. We know what it is to lose a son but you will get through it and the good memories will be the ones that you hold dear.

Tracie, So very sorry to hear about your loss....I can't imagine what you are going through right now. Although you are new to the Agile OFIS family, we are all here for you in any way that you need. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time.

Michelle Bourgeois, Houston, TX

Our hearts and prayers are with you. We are so sorry for your loss.

Mike, Mary Jane and Kristina Warren, Pearland, TX

My boys and I loved Garrott. He was a fun loving friend to both Jacob and Will. We are all heart broken and very sad to lose him. Words can't convey the sadness we feel for the family. We know the family has done everything possible to help with his challenges and nothing more could be done. Anytime we lose a family member its human nature to think there was something more we could have done. We have no control over our destiny and Garrott was lucky to have such a wonderful family. He will be in our hearts and thought of daily. May he rest in peace.

Reyna, Jacob and Will Moore, Houston, Tx

My strongest condolences go out to y'all. I went to pin oak with garrett and we were in the same theatre class and same gym class and we grew really close over the years. He was an amazing kid with the biggest heart and to hear that he passed was probably the worst news ive ever gotten. On wednesday, everyone at lamar was upset. there was not one person who wasnr affected by his death and i think thats important for y'all to know. You raised an incredible kid and that will not be overlooked. If you need anything i will be here for you, although i only knew garrett, his friends are our friends. Much love to you guys during this time of grieving. I will say prayers for you all and for Garrett. He will never be forgotten.

We lost our beautiful, charismatic, free-spirited son and brother early Wednesday morning. Garrett was our second child, who was loved wholeheartedly and unconditionally. We cherished all his wonderful and special traits, just as many of you did. He was intelligent, funny, caring, outgoing and loving, just to name a few. In recent years, however, Garrett’s battles with addiction resulted in emotional scarring and depression. We fought bravely alongside him, never losing sight of the ultimate prize – a happy, fulfilling and successful life.

Garrett found solace with his comrades this past year. We thank the many staff, parents and teenagers at Teen and Family Services and Sundown Ranch who provided their love, support and fellowship. They saw the best in Garrett and sincerely wanted to see him succeed in life.

We recently came across a very inspiring obituary, written by parents who also lost a son. It read…. "To all children, this note is a simple reminder that there are people who love you, with everything they have and no matter what you do - don't be too afraid/ashamed/scared, too anything, to ask for help. To all parents, pay attention to your children and the world that revolves around them - even when the surface is calm, the water may be turbulent just beneath.” Garrett’s inner struggles have ended, and he is now at peace with God. We will miss his commanding presence, infectious smile, sense of humor and loving hugs. We long for the day we get to see you again, our arms open wide and our hearts full of joy.

Goodbye, Garrett. We love you and miss you dearly!

Garrett is survived by his loving parents, Chad and Tracie Martin, older brother, Gavin Martin, maternal grandparents, Steven and Margaret Dalto, and paternal grandparents, Eric and Deanna Avery and Robert Martin, as well as several loving aunts, uncles and precious cousins.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a memorial service at three o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas 77027, where Dr. Thomas Pace is to officiate. A reception will follow at the church.

In lieu of customary remembrance, gifts in Garrett’s memory may be directed to Teen and Family Services, 9337 Katy Freeway, PMB 314, Houston, Texas 77024.

Dear Deanna and Eric, the handsome, smiling Garrett pictured here makes this even harder to bear. There's no doubt he was loved unconditionally. I am so terribly, terribly sorry for your loss. Love and prayers to you and his loving family.

I didn't know him and am a member of the addiction community . I can say that addiction is a disease and leaves scares that a parent can't heal . We can only love our children and provide the best care possible. God has a plan and it maybe hard to understand from our perspective . I am sad for your loss .
