Emil Edward Kovalcik, 98, peacefully departed this life January 4, 2016 after a short illness. He was born in Dayton, Texas October 9, 1917 to John and Frances Kovalcik. Emil served in the U.S. Army 1940-1945 in what became known as the 124th Cavalry Special Mars Task Force in India and Burma. He earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. The exploits of his unit were chronicled in the PBS documentary ‘The Last Horse Soldiers’ and in the book “Marsmen in Burma.” He retired in 1982 from Waukesha-Pearce Industries as Parts Manager.

Emil is preceded in death by his parents; brother John; first wife Eleanor Mayer Kovalcik, and daughter Julia Rose Kovalcik.

Emil is survived by his wife Evelyn Lorene Kovalcik; daughters Frances Brown, Rebecca Werlla and families; son John W. Kovalcik and family; and extended family: Dianne Hilkemeier, Don Graham and families. Emil and Evelyn are blessed with 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 8601 Chimney Rock Road, Houston, Texas at nine o’clock in the morning, Friday, January 8, 2016 with a service to follow at ten o’clock in the morning and a reception following at the church. Pastor Josh Duffy presiding. The burial will be at half past twelve o’clock in the afternoon at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

The family expresses thanks to the Houston VA palliative care team for their loving care in his last days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Emil’s honor may be directed to Pilgrim Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 8601 Chimney Rock Road, Houston Texas 77096.
