Dr. David Joseph Schmoll, age 61, passed away peacefully late Wednesday night, the 16th of July 2014, surrounded by his family.

Born in 1952 in Evanston, Illinois to Dr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Schmoll, David arrived in Houston in 1958 with his family. David graduated from St. John’s High School in 1970, where he lettered in three sports. He graduated from the University of Houston in 1977, but also attended Northwestern University and Pomona College.

David was a renaissance man. He was a general dentist and practiced for 30 years. David was an amateur photographer and represented the true meaning of amateur, which in Latin translates to “lover of”. His photographic work ranged from landscapes of the Mid-west to cityscapes of New York and Downtown Houston.

David was also an active singer throughout the years, participating in choruses such as the Houston Grand Opera, The Sons of Orpheus, and Christ Church Cathedral Parish Choir.

David is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Arthur. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughter, Gretchen; his parents, Joseph and Ruth, his nephew, Christopher, and many aunts and cousins across the country.

David’s robust laugh, sense of humor, wide ranging interests, and big heart will always be remembered.

Because David wished to be cremated, a memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 26th of July, at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue in Houston, where Rev. Patrick Miller is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the nearby Great Hall.

In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to Kids Hope USA at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Ave., Houston, TX, 77002; Kickstart Kids, 10260 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX, 77042; or to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Ave., Norwalk, CT, 06851 .
