Very sad news. I worked with/for Dave off and on for 10 years and remember him as very good to work for. Quiet and rather shy, but very bright, with a positive attitude and a wicked sense of humor! He is missed.

Dan Pratt, Houston, Texas

Our condolences and sympathies. Dave touched a lot of hearts in his career. He was kind and understanding during a time of stress and uncertainty in my career with Oxy California...his advice worked out well and my family has benefitted from it. We send our prayers to the Ryan family. Harry and Marie Angell

Although Dave's career and mine were similar in that we both worked for Cities Service and Occidental in both London and Bakersfield we were in the same time and place only briefly, I remember him fondly and saddened to hear of his passing at such a young age.

Byron Ayme, Bakersfield, Ca

The loss of a loved one is never easy. May Dave be at peace and for the family, may you find peace together. Carla, knowing Dave was a pleasure and I will always remember him turning me on to the "godmother drink" when we all went to DC together in 1984. God gets a special Angel. Bless you all.

Patti Harris, Newport News, VA

David Dalton Ryan, beloved husband and father, died peacefully and painlessly from heart failure on March 29, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. His kindness, generosity, and selflessness were unmatched and even in his death he exemplified the most extraordinary and considerate character.

Dave was born in Yonkers, NY to William H. Ryan and Joan Pryor Ryan on June 2, 1953. He grew up with his twin brother Daniel (1953-1997) and older brother Jim (1951-2012). He spent his teenage years in New City, NY before attending Michigan State University. After graduating with a degree in geology, he moved to Jackson, MS to work for Cities Service, which was eventually acquired by Occidental Petroleum Corporation where he would work tirelessly for nearly 40 years as a geophysicist and manager to provide for his wife and two children. He retired in December of 2014. In Jackson, he met his wife Carla (married August 5, 1979), and the two of them were deeply in love, traveled the world together, living in London, England, Katy, TX, Bakersfield, CA, Dubai, UAE, and Houston, TX, and made each other incredibly happy every day for 38 wonderful years. They had two children, Steven William Ryan (born 1980) and Devon Elizabeth Ryan (born 1983), both of whom consider him their hero.

Though a very reserved person to the outside world, Dave had a brilliant mind and incredible sense of humor. Reading was one of his great joys. He spent every waking moment of his life trying to make his loved ones lives’ better. He always did the right thing and was there to help when needed. Our world will never be the same without his quiet dignity and self-sacrifice. He is loved and missed beyond measure. He is survived by his wife, two children, and cat Maisie.

The family would like to thank the incredible doctors who kept him alive for so many years and valiant ICU nurses who were so kind to him and competent in their care in his final days. They also wish to thank Anita Powers, his friend and coworker of over 20 years for whom he had such great respect.
