Reidar, I am sorry that I did not get to meet your mother. I know how much she meant to you...you always spoke so fondly of her. Know that I am thinking of you and your family at this time. Evelyn

Karinne, Charles, and Reidar, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom, Aunt Pearl. She was such a wonderful lady and an inspiration to all that came into contact with her. I have told Karinne, many times, of the helping hand she gave to Zeke and me when we moved from Denham Springs, LA to Nederland, TX. She helped us find our way around town, having us over for a meal and finding a church. Heaven will be a brighter place with her presence. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

MaryAnn Sanchez, Lilburn, GA

Hoping you and your family will find the strength to be strong in your time of grieving. Sorry for your loss.

Your mother was such a special person in all aspects of her life. We know she will be missed by family and friends alike, but most especially, we will be thinking of you, Karinne, in the coming days. Your relationship with Clara, the great love and kindness you and Bill showed in being there for her, will long be remembered! We are sorry for your loss.

Clara Pearl Bowman Hansen, beloved mother of daughter, Marie Karinne McCullough and sons, Hilberg Reidar and Charles J. Hansen, went peacefully into the arms of Heaven, Thursday morning, February 20, 2014. At time of her passing, she was a resident of the Forum at Memorial Woods and under the care of Advantage Hospice. The family gratefully acknowledges and expresses its deep appreciation for the care, compassion and love mother received this past year from the Third Floor Staff, Jennifer Cramer, hospice R.N. and Chaplain Bob Dees. Special thanks to Shelly Williams for always engaging mother in activities and to Angie for making mother look beautiful every week.

But, most of all, the family recognizes mother’s church, South Main Baptist, the Reba Sunday School Class, Main Streamers and others there who welcomed her with open arms from the time she stepped through its doors in 1996 after moving to Houston from Nederland, Texas. She always felt that she belonged to this very special Community of Faith. One of the last things mother said was that she sure hoped she could get back to Sunday School. She often carried her Bible with her as she rolled around the halls of the Forum, smiling and speaking to everyone she saw.

Clara Pearl was born April 16, 1921 in Port Vincent, Louisiana to Charles Edward Bowman and Clara Perrilloux. With her passing just short of her 93rd birthday, she is the last of her generation having outlived her siblings, Julia Sanchez, Irene Wills, Cora Mae Kreider, Robert John, and Charles Edward, Jr. by many years.

She retired at age 73 from the State Department of Public Welfare in Port Arthur, Texas after 28 years. As the receptionist, and with her special knack for meeting people, she became an all-around go-to person who knew where every file actually was, regardless of where it should be. After moving to Houston, she volunteered at Diagnostic Hospital, Methodist Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC), and the Prayer Room at South Main Baptist. She kept contact with her husband’s heritage through the Sons of Norway Fraternity and always enjoyed attending the annual Seamen’s Church Christmas bazaar with Norwegian food and folk-dancing.

Clara Pearl was married 35 years to Hilberg R. Hansen of Andenses, Norway. He preceded her in death in April 1981. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Hendrick Leif Hansen in 1993.

Clara is survived by her daughter, Marie Karinne McCullough (Bill) of Houston, her son, Reidar Hansen (Anita) of Littleton, Colorado, and her son, Charles J. of North Carolina. Also left to treasure their memories of “Mawma” are her granddaughters, Erika, Kara and Laura, two great-grandsons, MacAllister and Riley, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family, as well as many friends. Her legacy includes kindness, compassion, optimism, resiliency, a love of learning and reading, competence, always doing a good job, and never meeting a stranger.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 25, 2014 from four until six o’clock in the evening at the Bradshaw Carter Home, 1734 W Alabama Street, Houston, Texas 77098. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 11 o’clock in the morning in the Chapel at South Main Baptist Church, 4100 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77002. A reception will follow immediately at the church after the service. A graveside service will be conducted at three o’clock in the afternoon at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3900 Twin City Highway, Hwy 347 & 39th Street, Port Arthur, Texas, 409-962-8448.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to Clara’s special interest in providing a better life to children, Smile Train, www.smiletrain.org; South Main Baptist Church, especially the Reba Garden where she so happily celebrated both her 80th and 90th birthdays surrounded by family and friends, or to the charity of one’s choice.
