BEVERLY TURNER MCDONALD, 91, of Houston died peacefully on August 27, 2014.
Born in Temple, Texas on Independence Day more than nine decades ago, she was raised in Elgin, Texas and in Houston where she graduated from Lamar High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Barnard College in New York and her Master’s degree in Library Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin.
Beverly loved her family more than anything, but was devoted as well to education, books, history, languages, music, travel, and to her church. In addition to being a loving mother and grandmother, she spent much of her life supporting, through gifts of her time and means, numerous educational, medical, service, cultural, and spiritual institutions in the Houston area.
She was preceded in death by her parents P. E. and Mary Turner, her step-mother Isla Carroll Turner, her brother-in-law Jesse Miles Brooks, MD, and her nephew Jesse Miles Brooks II.
She is survived by her beloved sister Virginia Turner Brooks of Atlanta, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Debra McDonald of Houston, grandchildren Matthew S. McDonald and Jamie G. McDonald of Houston, nephew Charles E. Brooks of Atlanta, and numerous cousins, family, and friends.
Visitation will be held at Bradshaw-Carter Funeral Home, 1734 West Alabama in Houston, on Monday, September 1 from 5 PM to 7 PM. Services will be held in Houston at the chapel of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road, on Tuesday, September 2 at 10 AM with burial to follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers are Bill Atkinson of Tampa, Florida, Charles E. Brooks of Atlanta, Texas, John W. Caudill, William H. Caudill, Victor A. Kormeier, Jr., and Matthew S. McDonald, all of Houston.
